Coordinator of Christian Education

Context: Messiah Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and an active participant in our synod and global church. We have a consistent Sunday School program that is growing and Confirmation and High School aged youth. 

Job Description: The Coordinator of Christian Education will serve Messiah Lutheran Church by overseeing education activities and curriculum for Sunday School. The coordinator is responsible for the planning and implementation in concert with pastors and volunteers. Over time, the coordinator shall strive for an intergenerational education program amongst Sunday School students, confirmands, high-schoolers, teachers and members of the congregation with a goal of supporting Sunday school aged children in their faith formation and spiritual growth.

This position shall adhere to the Personnel Policy of the Messiah Lutheran Church

Job Position:  Coordinator of Christian Education: 10-15 hours per week are flexible to meet the needs of the church based on planned activities and Sundays are generally required. With the opportunity for the position to grow in hours and benefits. 

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

  • Strong interpersonal skills through written and oral communication, use of technology (social media and email) and an ability to communicate with diverse ages: children, parents, and the wider congregation
  • An enthusiastic desire and sense of call to share the love of Christ with children, youth and families in our community – coupled with a strong personal faith and a familiarity willingness to learn about Lutheran theology.
  • Preferred leadership experience with coordination of multiple activities and an ability to meet deadlines
  • Preferred Bachelor’s Degree An interest in child development, faith development, and best practices for faith formation in children
  • A willingness to celebrate gender, age, and learning ability diversity amongst children. 
  • Satisfactory background check
  • Preference to those with an ELCA Lutheran background

Job and Administrative Responsibilities: 

  • Maintain administrative records (Student Registration Forms, Background Check Forms, Volunteer Contact Forms) and develop and adhere to the ministry budget including tracking expenses to ensure accountability.
  • Manage administrative duties and supplies for Sunday school. 
  • Coordinate, build relationships with and mobilize volunteer leaders to support the Christain Education program. 
  • Collaborate with pastors to develop new initiatives, traditions, faith formation classes and programs for children and families. 
  • Attend staff meetings, monthly ministry team meetings and regular programming sessions with pastors and staff.
  • Coordinate additional Youth and Family Ministries meetings as needed to meet programming goals.
  • Help to coordinate Vacation Bible School and assist in planning opportunities for outreach for youth in the wider community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Strategic Planning: Collaborate with the pastors to implement new programs to enhance and grow Children and Family Ministries. Maintain current awareness of curriculum trends and focus on enhancing Sunday School offerings and other faith formation. Grow children and youth programs into multi-generational programming. Develop new and strengthen current youth/family traditions.
