The Robert Malette Mission Endowment strengthens Messiah Lutheran Church’s long-term ministry by supporting projects that reach beyond our annual budget. This fund grows from a legacy of generosity and reflects our call to invest in ministry within our congregation, our local community, the Northern Great Lakes Synod, and the wider ELCA.
The Endowment was established through an extraordinary legacy gift from Robert (“Bob”) Malette, whose commitment to helping others grow in faith and life continues to shape Messiah’s mission. After a lengthy legal process that concluded in 2024, Bob’s planned gift became available to support the congregation he loved. His vision for empowering others and strengthening the church guides the purpose and future of this fund.
To honor his generosity, the endowment bears his name. The community and regional portion of the fund is also named the Kathy Soltwisch Community Fund, recognizing her early leadership in establishing an endowment ministry at Messiah.
The Endowment exists to sustain mission for generations to come, guided by transparent policies, ethical stewardship, and a commitment to long-term impact.
What the Endowment Supports
Each year, the Endowment Committee recommends distributions in three areas that extend Messiah’s mission:
Community and Synod Outreach
Grants to organizations and partners in Marquette and the surrounding region, as well as ministries within the Northern Great Lakes Synod, especially those serving people experiencing spiritual or economic need.
ELCA Mission Support
Support for national and global ministries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, including new mission starts, leadership development, hunger ministries, disaster response, global partnerships, and educational initiatives.
Congregational Capital and Ministry Projects
Investments in facilities, new ministry ventures, and initiatives that strengthen Messiah’s outreach and support our life together.
Distributions follow a phased spending plan designed to preserve the fund’s long-term health.
How to Apply for Funding
Members, ministry teams, and staff may apply for support using the standard application form. See the application document linked below for more information. Please note that the deadline for application for 2026 is February 15th and that applications must submitted in hard copy to the church office.
Legacy giving is a powerful way to sustain Messiah’s mission. Gifts through wills, beneficiary designations, insurance policies, or other assets help ensure that future generations continue to experience a strong, vibrant ministry grounded in hope and service.
Messiah welcomes both unrestricted gifts and donor-directed gifts that align with the endowment’s purpose. Donors interested in establishing new designated funds are encouraged to consult with the Endowment Committee for clarity and long-term planning.
